A woman discovers that some Thanksgiving traditions carry on even after death. A work of flash fiction from our Nibs literary line.

Laughter and chatter filled every room of the house, just the way I wanted it to. The mouth-watering aroma of four enormous pumpkin pies, all baked to Grandma Ethel’s famous, family recipe, teased my guests ahead of tomorrow’s traditional Thanksgiving family feast.

I loved Thanksgiving, better than any other celebration. Better than Christmas, better than birthdays. No gifts, no fake thank-yous to pass around. Just one big “Thanksgiving”celebration with all the people I loved the most…well nearly all.

We’d lost Mom to a year-long battle with cancer only a few months ago and this would be the first Thanksgiving we celebrated without her. I don’t know if everyone had made an extra special effort to get together because of that, or if it was simply no one could bear to be alone without her customary Thanksgiving phone call, but whatever it was, I was glad to have a houseful.
