Fictionwise and eReader: Same Company, Different Discounts, Same Items

This one is a bit odd…..

Fictionwise is offering a 100% Micropay rebate on all purchases of J.R.R. Tolkien, with 30% off Multiformat Fantasy and Dark Fantasy and 30% Micropay rebate on Secure Format Fantasy and Dark Fantasy.

So now the weird part.  Fictionwise owns eReader, and they are running the same promotion.  Well, sort of.  You can buy the J.R.R. Tolkien titles for 50% off, and 25% off Fantasy and Dark Fantasy.

So….same company, same products, different discounts? Is this so that Fictionwise isn’t in competition with itself? Or is it in this case?  Guess it’s up to the reader to decide where they want to spend their money, but this seems like a very strange setup.  Even the emails were almost exactly the same.

For what it’s worth, BooksOnBoard is also offering 30% off on all the Tolkien titles. Take advantage of these promos to get some classic fantasy for your ebook reader.

One Response to Fictionwise and eReader: Same Company, Different Discounts, Same Items

Fictionwise operates its web sites independently. The offers are not quite the same because the sites have different discounting schemes. For example there is no “buywise club” at ereader. However, ereader has a rewards program open to any customer who is opting in to newsletters. The mathematics of these differences leads to slightly different offers on the sites, but they are designed to yield approximately the same level of discounting to the end customers.

There are many other differences between the two sites. Fictionwise has many different ebook formats while ereader only has ereader format. New customers tend to prefer the simpler ereader site, but there are tens of thousands of Fictionwise fans who like the ability to get any format or prefer other aspects of Fictionwise. So we continue to run both sites because they serve different audiences.
