OFF FLESH By Andy Frankham-Allen Receives 4-Star Review

Off FleshWe’re pleased to say that Andy Frankham-Allen’s first release with Untreed Reads, Off Flesh, has received a 4-star review from a reader at Smashwords. Here’s what Sharon Bidwell had to say:

A story that starts out sounding like the opening of a Du Maurier, eases into tones of King and Hitchcock and finishes up with dark touches of Lovecraft. Off-Flesh by Andy Frankham Allan — not to be read by the truly squeamish.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

About Off Flesh:

When Wyndham enters the hotel’s lift and fails to reappear elsewhere, Jensen discovers that sometimes craving the company of someone other than your spouse can have very serious consequences.

Michael Matson’s DIAMOND TREE Gets Rave Review at Ebook Addicts

The Diamond TreeStories for children are a new realm for Untreed Reads, and we’re very glad to hear that Kathy K at Reviews by Ebook Addicts has fallen for our first release entitled The Diamond Tree written by Michael Matson. Here’s what Kathy had to say:

Even though this is touted as a children’s fantasy story I have to admit to falling in love with Michael Matson’s The Diamond Tree.  His storytelling was magical but with an element of real life to it.  Dall didn’t complete his quest in a matter of days or weeks, but rather it took years; I really enjoyed that facet of the story.  Even as a child you know that really big things don’t happen overnight so it’s refreshing to read a story where important work takes time; wonderful!

While this is also labeled fantasy, to my mind it would be just as appropriate to call it a fairy tale, but a more modern version. But whatever you would call this story, I call it fabulous!  And it’s a story that I will enjoy sharing again and again with the children in my life.  All I can say is thank heavens that kids love going over favorite stories again and again; it gives me a chance to return over and over to Dall’s adventures with nary a wince… after all I’m reading it to the kids. *grin*

New High-Rated Review For Neil Plakcy’s AT THE DINER

At the DinerWhen we published Neil Plakcy’s At the Diner, we were pretty overwhelmed by the level of emotion in it. Apparently, we aren’t the only ones. Kathy K. from Reviews at Ebook Addict took the time to review the title, and we’re happy to see she enjoyed it as well:

Kathy’s Review:

At the Diner is only 6 pages, but in those few pages Neil Plakcy shows us two men, father and son, estranged and, without saying anything, trying to find their way back to a relationship.  Told from the son’s—Jerry—point of view I was immediately connected with what he was feeling.  Not only had he lost his mother but his father as well… a father whom he felt he could never satisfy.

My heart went to him totally and I mourned even as he couldn’t, or wouldn’t.

But as the story progresses we see that, by small degrees, Phil is trying to mend the rift between them.  Even seeing through Jerry’s eyes I still got a real feel for his father but, not being invested emotionally the way that Jerry was, I could understand that in his own mostly non-verbal way Phil was trying.

Now this is a story that, even as short as it is, holds a solid wallop that I felt for quite some time. In fact I’ve re-read Neil’s short At the Diner a few times in the time I’ve had it… and I believe that I will continue to do so.

It’s about a journey that most of us have either undertaken or at least understand and tied to family it has the potential to really affect the reader. Beautifully done Mr. Plakcy; it’s no wonder you’re one of my favorite authors.

Our thanks to Kathy for her very generous review. Be sure to read more reviews of Untreed Reads titles by Ebook Addict Reviews by visiting http://www.ebookaddictreviews.com/category/untreed-reads/.

SONG ON THE SAND By Ruth Sims Earns Five Stars At Amazon

Song on the SandSong on the Sand, the latest novella release from author Ruth Sims, has earned five-stars from reviewer Martha Miller at Amazon. Here’s what Ms. Miller had to say:

One of my favorite stories is Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” I find myself drawn to it because of the unusual ending. In “Song of the Sand,” Ruth Sims pays homage to Hemingway’s haunting final scene, only instead of an African safari, readers are thrust down in the middle of Sunnyland Acres nursing home.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to drag queens when they get old, Sims gives us a plausible picture with the bittersweet (yet unsentimental) story of Tony Dalby. His dry wit eclipses deep feelings or pain and regret about the past, yet he doesn’t hide his anger about the present. The story begins with a resounding “No,” as he argues with the powers that be, “Big Butt and “Mean Aid,” while he is dressed. He looks forward to the daily confrontations, even though he always loses, because they make him feel alive. He makes his caregivers work hard to dress him, and then they wheel him to the sunroom and park him there. Little does he know that things are about to change. For all of us, transformation comes on a completely normal day and is often so subtle that it takes time to recognize it. On this day, Tony first sees a visitor who wears a red shirt and dark jeans, “and his hair [is] as fair as if Rumpelstiltskin had spun it that very morning.” Tony remembers of a time when a man like that would be waiting in his dressing room, when he had a dressing room.

Ruth Sims doesn’t go for the cliché. This is not a romance but a story of redemption that involves the reader by depth of character, humor and irony. The fair haired young man is Drew who visits his lover Jesse, a nursing home resident who has been unresponsive since he was hit by a car. Drew had to lie and commit fraud to keep his lover alive and be able to visit him, and he is torn by the injustice. Tony befriends Drew and Jesse and finds that by helping them his life takes on new significance.

In truth, aging is not for the faint of heart. Tony and Drew are the heroes in a drama that awaits many of us. The story will resonate with baby-boomers because it’s about the things that scare us all as we approach old age: that we’ll end up powerless, helpless, loveless and alone. As “A Song of Sand” comes to an end, we realize we always wanted the best for Tony, and as with Hemingway’s white hunter, the best comes.

We appreciate the kind review!

New Review For “Flying Solo” By Wade J. McMahan

Flying Solo“Flying Solo” by Wade J. McMahan has just been reviewed by Kathy K. over at Ebook Addict Reviews, who had this to say:

A really, really short story, Flying Solo is 7 pages long and yet I was left reeling and all in a good way. When, in the description, it says that you’ll never look at stories about fairies the same way they hit the nail on the head!

Flying Solo isn’t a story that’s going to change your world, other than to send you off into giggles, but it is going to provide a brief respite from the day-to-day.

And for me it’s given me yet another author that I’m very interested in reading more from.
Just the whole idea of a hairy-legged Fairy named Larry is enough to let you know just how serious to take the story, but what cements the appeal is the mind behind the hairy legs. Oh my, never get on Larry’s wrong side is the lesson I take from this tale. And this is also what has me very curious about Mr. McMahan’s other writing… what a treat.

Great Review For Giselle Renarde’s “Ugly Naked People”

uglycorrectedsm Great Review For Giselle Renardes Ugly Naked PeopleWe’d like to congratulate author Giselle Renarde who just received an excellent review for her short story “Ugly Naked People” over at Ebook Addict Reviews. Here’s what reviewer Justine had to say:

Ugly Naked People offers a brief glimpse in the troubled relationship of its main characters.  Rave – accepting of others, herself as a lesbian and her love for a woman, Astrid, was fully developed even in these too brief pages.  Astrid – embarrassed by public displays of affection from her lover, hiding her relationship from her mother is unaware of her own self loathing. She captivated me.  I wanted to know how these two opposites came together.  I wanted to know what event occurred which causes Astrid to spiral down the self destructive path of not eating.  For me the best stories either wrap everything up into a neat package or are those that leave me wanting more.  After reading Ugly Naked People I wanted more.  In this case, that’s a good thing!

We’d like to thank Justine and the folks at Ebook Addict Reviews for their kind words. To read more great reviews, visit their website by visiting http://www.ebookaddictreviews.com.

About “Ugly Naked People”:

Rave is concerned about her girlfriend Astrid’s rapidly declining weight and health. As Astrid’s eating disorder begins to take its toll on the couple’s relationship, Rave hopes that a dramatic move on her part will save both Astrid and the future they could have together.

We hope that people enjoy reading the work, but also take a bit of hope to those who may be suffering under similar circumstances.
