Simon And Schuster To Sell Ebooks On Scribd.com

From The New York Times and reporter Brad Stone:

In another sign that book publishers are looking to embrace alternatives to Amazon.com’s Kindle e-book store, Simon & Schuster has agreed to sell digital copies of its books on Scribd.com, a popular document-sharing Web site.

Books from best-selling authors like Stephen King would be among the titles available for purchase on Scribd.com.

Simon & Schuster, a division of CBS, plans to announce Friday that it will make digital editions of about 5,000 titles available for purchase on the site, including books from best-selling authors like Stephen King, Dan Brown and Mary Higgins Clark. It will also add thousands of other titles to Scribd’s search engine, allowing readers to sample 10 percent of the content of the books on the site and providing links to buy the print editions.

“We are interested in getting our books in front of consumers in as many formats and distribution platforms as possible,” said Ellie Hirschhorn, chief digital officer of Simon & Schuster.

Unlike Amazon, which sets the retail price for its e-books and sells them in its own proprietary Kindle format, Scribd is offering publishers considerably more control over how their digital titles are sold.

Simon & Schuster will sell its books on Scribd for 20 percent off the list price of the most recent print edition. Amazon sets a price of $9.99 for many popular e-books, meaning titles there might be less expensive. But Scribd will allow publishers to see what is selling and change their prices accordingly.

Scribd also gives publishers 80 percent of revenue. Amazon reportedly gives publishers about half of the list price of books sold for the Kindle, but also discounts many titles and in some cases chooses to make no revenue itself from those sales.

Simon & Schuster will sell its books with anticopying software from Adobe, which means those books can be transferred to devices like the Sony Reader and some mobile phones, but not to Amazon’s Kindle.

Scribd, a start-up based in San Francisco, also says it is working on a reading application for the iPhone, which should be ready in a few weeks.

The Scribd Web site is the most popular of several document-sharing sites that take a YouTube-like approach to text, letting people upload sample chapters of books, research reports, homework and recipes. About 60 million users a month read documents on the site, embed them in blogs and share links to texts over social networks and e-mail messages.

Scribd has been criticized by publishers in the past for allowing users to upload pirated copies of their works. In an effort to combat the practice, Scribd will use the digital files of Simon & Schuster’s books to find and remove unauthorized copies from its site.

Trip Adler, Scribd’s chief executive, says the company is also talking to other major American publishers. “This is the first public endorsement by a major force in publishing that the social Web will play a major role in the future of book sales,” Mr. Adler said.

Mundania Press Acquires Hard Shell Word Factory

Here’s some great news in regards to one of ebook publishing’s oldest houses:

Message from Dan Reitz, Sr. of Mundania
Press, LLC
:

I am pleased to announce that Mundania Press has finalized
an agreement to acquire Hard Shell Word Factory.

Hard Shell Word Factory, one of the oldest epublishing companies, was
started in 1996 by Teri Lea Chandler of Independence, MO. Mary Z. Wolf,
who first worked with Hard Shell as an author, bought the company at the
end of 1997. After ten years, Mary has decided to retire from full-time
publishing and has penned a deal with Mundania Press LLC to continue
Hard Shell’s growth in the industry.

Hard Shell publishes book-length quality non-fiction and fiction, in
ebook and trade paperback–Romance (all categories), Mystery & Suspense,
Action & Adventure, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Western,
Historical, Mainstream, Young Adult and Children’s books.

While Hard Shell will remain a separate company as an imprint of
Mundania Press LLC, all Mundania, Phaze, Awe-Struck, and Hard Shell
authors are considered in-house with all companies.

Regards,
Daniel J. Reitz, Sr.

MLR Press Adds Ebookstore To Website

Fans of authors and titles from indie house MLR Press will be happy to know that they’ve launched their own ebookstore to sell their titles directly from their website. For those who like to see publishers and authors get the full sale of titles instead of a middleman (Untreed Reads raises its hand), this is really terrific news.

You can check out the new ebookstore by clicking HERE.  Looks like most titles are available in PRC, HTML or PDF.

Amazon Buys Lexcycle And The Stanza Reader

Well now, this one gets all kinds of heads a-scratching:

http://www.lexcycle.com/lexcycle_acquired_by_amazon

Lexcycle is the creator of the Stanza Reader, the second most popular iPhone reading application behind Amazon’s own Kindle Reader (copyright-infringing Wattpad is number 3, eReader at 4 as of this writing).

Clearly Amazon is getting behind ebooks, but isn’t it just a bit odd that they would choose to own two different pieces of reading software.  Sorry…make that three after Mobipocket also.  Both apps are free, but I can tell you that the Stanza Reader is infinitely better than the current incarnation of the Kindle Reader for iPhone.

Lexcycle claims that nothing will change with their software, but I think that remains to be seen.  Lexcycle has had some great relationships with etailers such as Fictionwise, who was recently purchased by Barnes and Noble.  It will be interesting to see if Amazon will view the FW/B&N relationship as competiton and force them off the Stanza app, or keep readers happy who can currently download their FW bookshelves for reading in the app’s current state.

This will definitely be one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks/months.

Which of the three main readers to you prefer: Kindle, Stanza or eReader?

Charity Ebook: DEADLY SECRETS by Leeann Burke

Proceeds of the sale of the ebook Deadly Secrets from author Leeann Burke and publisher LBF Books will benefit the American Breast Cancer Foundation  and Cancer Research.  At only $3.88 directly from the publisher, this is a great cause to support.

The Blurb:

Philippe Lafrance is a well known reclusive writer whose life is suddenly thrown upside down when the grandfather he never knew existed, dies. He investigates the reason and learns that his family has kept secrets from him. Deep, ugly secrets. Worse, a killer is murdering the men in his family. He discovers that his father, then his grandfather, were murdered by someone desperate to keep secrets buried.

Bereft, Roxanne St-Clair is left to manage a restaurant when the only person who ever mattered to her, her foster parent and mentor, is murdered. She puts her life on hold to find his killer and bring him to justice.

Thrown together by circumstance and a mutual goal, Philippe and Roxanne fight their attraction and team up to find the killer, bring him to justice and unearth the truth. To stay alive, they must keep one step ahead of the assassin in order to prevent him from killing his next target, Philippe.

Will they succeed in bringing to justice this killer before Philippe becomes his next victim? Will they be able to deal with the truth behind the deadly secrets?

Publisher Closure: Forbidden Publications

Untreed Reads is sad to report the closure of independent publisher Forbidden Publications, who enjoyed a three year run and brought a lot of new fiction to the ebook world.  Here’s hoping their authors find new homes soon for their work.

Warning To Authors! Check Wattpad.com!

Wattpad.com bills itself as a way for people to share personal content in ebook format.  They recently released an application for the iPhone as well.

However, a very simple search reveals that the site is absolutely riddled with illegally uploaded content.  Authors such as Janet Evanovich, Charlaine Harris and J.K. Rowling are just some of the authors currently being posted illegally for free through their service.

Be sure to check to see if your work is part of their library.  If so, go to “FEEDBACK” and send an email to the site.  Under subject choices, there is a spot for “I want to report copyright violations.”  Be sure to use it liberally!
